How we choose and order tools
Last updated: October 22, 2026
What gets listed
Each use-case page is a short list of tools for one job, such as meeting notes or deploying an app. A tool is included when, in our editorial judgment, it does that job well for our readers (builders and non-technical professionals), it's available to sign up for today, and we can describe its pricing and free tier from its official website. We keep each list short on purpose rather than listing every tool that exists.
How the regular listings are ordered
We set the order of each use-case list by hand. The first tool is the one we'd suggest trying first for that job, based on how well it does the job, how easy it is to get started and what it costs. When we change the order, we record the date and the reason. The price filters only hide tools; they don't reorder them. The Just launched page is ordered by launch date, newest first. Search on the home page matches your words to use cases.
What doesn't affect the regular listings
Affiliate programs, commissions, Featured slots and newsletter sponsorships don't decide which tools we list or the order they're in. The code that builds our regular lists doesn't read affiliate, sponsorship or commission data, and a check on every build of the site fails if it does. Some listed tools have affiliate programs, and those links are labeled next to the link.
Comparison pages
On comparison pages, we say which tool we'd pick for which kind of reader, and why. Affiliate links there are labeled the same way.
Free-tier labels
Each tool is tagged free, generous free tier, limited free tier, trial only or paid only. When a tag is marked as checked, we compared it against the tool's official pricing page. Otherwise it's marked unverified.
Sponsored placements
Paid placements appear in a separate Featured box labeled Sponsored, or in a newsletter section labeled Sponsored. If a sponsored tool is also in a regular list, it keeps its regular position and carries the Sponsored label there too. Sponsored placements never get a StackDrop badge or the word "Pick".
See our Affiliate and Sponsorship Disclosure.
Newsletter
Affiliate links in the newsletter are marked "(affiliate)" next to the link.
