Design Skills for AI-Built Sites

Short version: if your AI-built site looks like everyone else's, give your coding agent better design rules and a way to check its own work. Impeccable and Taste Skill do both. Awesome DESIGN.md hands the agent a ready-made design system, UI UX Pro Max suggests styles, colors and fonts for your kind of product, Emil Kowalski's skills fix animation, and Playwright MCP lets the agent open the page in a real browser. All six are free and open source.

Why AI-built sites look alike: Impeccable's README blames models trained on the same SaaS templates. It lists the giveaways, including Inter for everything, purple-to-blue gradients, cards nested inside cards, and gray text on colored backgrounds.

Licenses and GitHub stars are as of October 26, 2026, from GitHub's public API. All six are free. They run on the coding agent you already use, so they count toward that plan's usage limits.

What each one does

UI UX Pro Max. Tell it what kind of product you're building, and it suggests matching styles, colors and typography from a searchable catalog of UI styles. You can install it from Claude Code's plugin marketplace, and its command-line installer sets it up for Cursor, Codex and other agents. Its search script needs Python 3. The repo is free and MIT-licensed, and its makers sell a separate Premium version with brand and asset tools.

Awesome DESIGN.md. More than 80 DESIGN.md files, each one extracted from a real company's website. Copy one into your project and ask your agent to build in that style. DESIGN.md is a plain-text format that Google Stitch introduced. Treat the file as a starting point, not a copy of someone else's brand.

Taste Skill. It gives the agent an art direction, finds real photos in open archives and credits them, then checks the page in a real browser at three screen widths and fixes the biggest problems it sees. Its author says a build takes 30 to 45 minutes and a few hundred thousand tokens, so it isn't a quick fix.

Impeccable. One skill with 24 commands, including audit, critique, polish, typeset and layout, plus 62 rule-based checks for common AI design giveaways. The checks also run from its command line or browser extension, with no AI model or API key. It started from Anthropic's frontend-design skill.

Emil Kowalski's skills. Mostly about animation: choosing the right easing and timing, reviewing your animations and fixing ones that stutter. Others make a web app feel native on a phone, or try to break your UI with worst-case data like very long names. Kowalski says the skills come from his years at Vercel and Linear.

Playwright MCP. This one's a tool, not a skill. It's Microsoft's MCP server that lets your agent open and use pages in a real browser, working from the page's structure rather than screenshots. Pair it with a design skill so the agent can see what it built. Microsoft notes that coding agents may do better with its Playwright CLI and skills, which use fewer tokens.

Which one should you start with?

All six are free, so try one on a single page before you change the whole site. For the agents that run them, see our shortlists of AI code editors and terminal coding agents. For general-purpose skill packs, see the most-starred Claude Code skills.

Questions

How do I make an AI-built website look less AI-generated?
Give your coding agent design rules and a way to see its own work. Impeccable checks for common AI design giveaways, Taste Skill sets an art direction and checks pages in a real browser, and Playwright MCP lets any MCP-capable agent open the page itself. All three are free.
Are these design skills free?
Yes. All six are open source, under the MIT or Apache 2.0 license. They run on the coding agent you already use, so they count toward that plan's usage limits.
Is Playwright MCP a design skill?
No. It's Microsoft's browser tool for AI agents. It lets your agent open, click through and read a page, which is how a design skill can check what it built.
