Cursor vs Windsurf
Short version: if you want the cheapest paid plan that still writes code for you, Cursor's $8 Plus plan gets you in the door, but only with Grok models. If you want OpenAI, Claude and Gemini models included in the price, Windsurf's $20 Pro plan is the simpler deal.
One thing to know before you compare: Windsurf doesn't really go by Windsurf anymore. Its website now forwards to Devin, and the app is sold as Devin Desktop. Same lineage, new name on the bill.

Where Cursor wins
- Cheapest way in. $8 a month is the lowest paid price here. The catch is that Plus only runs Grok models.
- More steps on the ladder. Five individual plans, so you can move up in smaller jumps instead of going from $20 straight to $200.
- Extras on Premium and up. Cloud agents, code hosting, and AI code reviews (Bugbot) all start at the $30 Premium plan.
- It's bundled with X and Grok. Your plan's usage pool is shared with Grok chat, images and Grok Bot. Handy if you use those anyway, wasted if you don't.
Watch out for: other companies' models (Claude, GPT and so on) aren't included in any plan. On Premium and up you can use them, but you pay API list price on top.
Where Windsurf wins
- Big-name models in the base price. Pro includes access to OpenAI, Claude, Gemini and open-source models, not just one company's.
- A free plan that's useful for autocomplete. Tab completions and inline edits are unlimited on Free.
- Cloud agents at $20. Devin Cloud comes with Pro. On Cursor you need the $30 plan for that.
Watch out for: there's no middle plan. Outgrow Pro and the next stop is $200 a month, though you can buy extra usage at API prices instead.
Which one should you pick?
- Trying AI coding on a tight budget: start on either free plan. If you'd rather pay a little, Cursor Plus at $8 is the cheapest.
- You want Claude or GPT without extra bills: Windsurf Pro at $20.
- You already pay for X or use Grok a lot: Cursor, since one plan covers both.
- Small team: do the math. Cursor starts at $30 a seat. Windsurf is $40 a seat plus $80 a month for the team, so at list price Cursor comes out cheaper at any team size.

Both have free plans, so the honest advice is to open the same project in each for an afternoon and keep whichever one you stop fighting with.
